Emerging or perhaps established smart technologies have new competitors trying to re-break entry barriers – perhaps a case of the empire strikes back. The app economy basis itself on making the ability to provide a service a lot more simpler.

The ease of technology lets us use apps for entertainment too. Being switched on is nice and the different products that adopt a smart approach ensures that USP’s of vendor products are constantly fuelling innovation. However, with new style devices absorbing the smart needs, are phones really required to be smart, should the tablet be a phablet or a remain a pass time device ? should we let bionic robots work smart for us ? If so, back to basic devices  are quite appealing and may be the best way to ensure segregation and separation of duty for technology use – perhaps a breath of fresh air . Punkt has created a stylish phone that serves only phone, texting and bluetoooth features.

Imagine that, taking a break abroad - warm sunny beaches and your smart-phone launches 20 apps telling you how your company is performing, you get alerts on employee status updates and your inbox increases its count. Alternatively you might want to go on a proper holiday and take your back to basic designer phone as an emergency device only - phone or text.  I'd prefer a holiday than a break.

Whilst vertical and horizontal alignment of industries can help build consumer numbers that are best place to use smart-devices, perhaps we might see  consumers define which devices they expect to see different USPs designed into. With the many flavours of human persuasions, focused smart devices will themselves be redefined into different service focused applications and as such Smart Engineering is well positioned for technology innovation.
