Now that the 2013/14 IET Communities session has ended I have collated some of the best content that our Communities have created over the last year. Here is my top 10 but please feel free to add any others in the comments below:

So, in no particular order:

Young Professionals Engineering Challenge
London Network (YP Section)

In August the London Young Professionals held an Engineering Challenge to build a tall tower out of dried spaghetti to emulate the Shard skyscraper in London. One of the judges was former Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award winner Roma Agrawal who provided the delegates with some interesting facts around the building of the Shard. You can also take a look at some of the photos from the event via this Storify post.

Taros 2014
Robotics and Mechatronics Network

During the Taros 2014 conference, we asked Dr Sethu Vijayakumar, Professor of Robotics in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh and Director of the Institute for Perception, Action and Behaviour to provide some insights into the latest developments around robotics including imitation learning.

Embracing Social Media – How do you get your message across?
Multimedia Communications Network

Not strictly about engineering but in March Louise Hayter (Immerse Learning), Bryony Thomas (Watertight Marketing) and Barry Flynn (Barry Flynn Communications) shared some industry hot-tips for setting up a social media strategy for businesses. Interesting insights into how engineering and technology companies could be using social media to promote their business.

UK Fracking: Managing the risks
Lancashire and Cumbria Network and others

Fracking is a very hot topic in the UK because of the impact it could have on the environment. This event, organised by a number of local networks working together, showed the diversity of risks and opinions. An excellent set of talks for anyone who wants to get their head around some of the main issues.

Interview with Trunki Founder Rob Law
Somerset and West Wiltshire Network

Trunkis are everywhere!!! If you don’t know what they are, it’s fair to say you have probably seen one at an airport. They are the cute children’s suitcases made to look like animals. The Founder, Rob Law, gave us a number of exclusive insights into re-shoring businesses back into the UK.

IBC 2014
Multimedia Communications Network

The International Broadcasting Convention is a huge conference that takes place in Amsterdam every year. The IET is a key partner to the conference and this enables us to interview some of the key delegates. This year we filmed 16 interviews and they provided us with some key insights around the area of multimedia communications.

Antennas and Propagation Network

The second year of what is fast becoming one of the IET Communities best events. This series of exclusive interviews helps explain what the Colloquium is and provides highlights of some of the presentations.

Review of the 2013 Asset Management Conference
Asset Management Network

The IET run the biggest Asset Management Conference in the UK and with many excellent papers submitted the Asset Management Network were able to come up with a summary of the best. This film features members of the network talking through some of the highlights from the conference.

Enabling BIM and the Crossrail Smart Railway
Railway Network

Crossrail is a huge railway project in London that will connect the city and make travel much easier. In this talk, Ross Dentten, Asset Information & Configuration Manager for Crossrail in London provides an overview of the Crossrail programme, its current progress and also covers some of the Asset Management issues.

3D printing in New Zealand
New Zealand Networks

Not a film but a blog post based on a series of lectures by 3D printing guru David ten Have COO of Makey Makey, a creative hardware company started by two MIT graduates. David’s talk, entitled ‘3D printing. The Good, Bad and the Ugly’ was a high level presentation on digital fabrication and 3D printing in particular. The lecture focused on the social, design and economic contexts, unpicked the hype behind the topic and addressed the sector’s strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. David has quite a big following on Twitter so there was lots of activity on our Twitter feed in the run up to his lectures.

That’s my 10. I think it showcases the amazing range and depth of content that comes out of our IET Community events. Have I missed anything? Let me know by commenting below….
  • Great set of articles Steve! Really enjoyed the videos!

It would take me forever to list everything you have missed ;)

I think it's a credit to our volunteers that we could easily showcase 100's of excellent activities!
  • I don't know how you limited it to ten! I am already thinking of so much more... The Rural Broadband event that the Satellite Systems and Applications Network organised really stood out for me.
  • What a great round up! The communities get so busy during the year and so much happens that it can be hard to remember all the high points - this is a wonderful way to remind ourselves about the amazing things that the IET's volunteers get up to every day ;o)
